Travel Wessex

Wherever you go in Wessex there is interest. May be it is a beautiful cathedral in an ancient city, perhaps it is a delightful winding footpath through woods, along fields or beside a stream. Then there is mystical Dartmoor with its standing stones and haunting ghost stories. A famous site may be like Stonehenge or Avebury.

Bath Literature Festival

This popular festival is being held between the 2nd of March and 11th March this year. It will be the biggest ever this year!!!!!

Winchester Real Ale & Cider Festival

16th and 17th March 2012. Right in the centre of Winchester in the Guildhall.

This event will feature nearly eighty different real ales, ciders, perries and foreign bottled beers. Quite a selection!

Trip Advisor has just announced the winners of the Traveller's Choice Awards Hotels 2012 in the United Kingdom.

Five of these winners are in Wessex Hotels.

They are:

At No 5 -

The Crimdon Dene Hotel, Torquay, Devon.
This hotel also has an amazing 10.0 as a review rating!!!! Location, Location, Location!!!!

At No 6 -

Yeoldon House Hotel, Bideford, Devon.
This lovely Victorian Country Hotel overlooks the River Torridge.

At No 8 -

Shelley's, Lynmouth, Devon
Has an incredible review rating of 9.3 and overlooks the Bay!

At No 10 -

Bath House, Chard, Somerset.
Another lovely little hotel with an amazing review rating of 10.0!!!

At No 12 -

Cary Court Torquay, Devon.
With a fantastic review rating of 9.2, the hotel is close to the harbourside entertainment area.

Traveller's Choice Awards say a lot and with 5 of these hotels in the top 12, Wessex has great accommotation values!

The Watercress Line

2012 The Watercress Line celebrates its 35th Annniversary. Congratulations to all the staff and volunteers who make this railway possible.

Check out their special events for this year, plenty for everyone from tots to nineties.

Thought about joining the volunteers? All sorts of people needed from folk to tend to station gardens to those who drive the trains! Time - from one day a week to whatever you have time for. Have a look, you could find a whole new interest.

Hartland Abbey Snowdrop weekend

Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th February 11 am until 4pm. These little plants come up every year to delight us and herald the spring. Some of these bulbs were planted hundreds of years ago!!! A feast of snowdrops from the Walled Garden to the Sea!

Hedge Laying Competition Isle of Wight

An old art and a competition of skill!

The 20th Annual Competition will be held on 25th February 2012 from 10am until 3.30pm at New Barn Farm, Calbourne.

Lots of prizes for competitors. Spectators welcome, so come and watch this ancient art in practice both with machine and hand tools.

Hambledon Valentine Walk 6.5 miles

What about a romantic walk for Valentine's Day and the McMillan Cancer Charity???

This walk is one through an Area of Outstanding Beauty, a picturesque wander along a village street, past a Saxon church, a vineyeard and two cricket grounds. Hambledon saw the birth of cricket.

Although the walk is not that long it is not suitable for children apparently and sadly wheelchairs cannot climb over stiles.

Advance Notice - Combe Martin Carnival

There will be a Carnival at Combe Martin this year!! What great news. Congratulations to the new Committee.

Their website has not been updated yet but the Carnival in 2012 will be held between the 5th to 10th August.

Combe Martin is a delightful seaside village in North Devon. Not a bad idea to have a short break in this area during the Carnival.
